A few of my favourite things #82

How lovely was yesterday? Spring is well and truly here. Not gonna lie, I was a bit disappointed not to have had a snow day after last year but I’m glad to see the sun again.

Ready for a look back at last week?

Writing workshop

In case you missed it, I went to a writing workshop on Tuesday and interviewed writer Anna Mansell. It was a big confidence booster. Normally when I attend non-blogger events I feel like I won’t be taken seriously when I say I’m a blogger but it was definitely not the case here – and it was great to meet some fellow Cornish bloggers.

Vox

I put this on my hold list at the library a while back and finally read it last week. It was sooo good!

Set in a not-so-distant future, women (and young girls) are restricted to just 100 words a day and a device fixed to their wrists shocks them if they go above their daily allowance. They’re also removed from the workplace. And that’s just the start.

It’s sad to think that, although extreme, it’s not hard to imagine a similar future. We’ve come so far and yet we seem to be moving backwards in terms of democracy and inclusivity.

I much preferred Vox (affiliate link) to the likes of The Handmaid’s Tale and The Power. Have you read it yet?

Smear test

It’s a bit weird to include this on my favourites but it’s something I wanted to highlight.

This was my fourth smear test. I’ve also previously had the (dis)pleasure of two colposcopies and a few internal ultrasounds, so I knew what to expect. That said, it’s certainly far from a pleasant experience but so important.

If you’re aged 25 and over and have a cervix, please keep up to date with your smears. If you feel anxious or uncomfortable, book a double appointment, have a chat with your nurse beforehand, and take someone along with you if you’d like a chaperone.

Spring bucket list

I’ve been writing in my bullet journal every day this year. Keeping it minimal has helped me to embed it in my regular routine but I miss my more colourful spreads. Fortunately it doesn’t take much to add a splash of colour, especially with these beautiful stamps. Check out my latest bujo post to see what I used.

Chilling with Jenson

I love hanging out with Jenson at the weekend while Luke is at work (sorry, Luke!). We made the most of the sunshine yesterday and popped to the park, came home for our picnic (indoor picnics have become one of our favourite things to do at the weekend – we need to start moving these outside) and then took his bike out for a few (dozen) laps. Oh, and I managed to do the laundry, dishes and bake banana bread. I felt like a freaking Super-Mum!

It looks like it should be a dry, sunny week, so I’m looking forward to more adventures when I’m done with my working week.

How was your weekend?

  1. VOX sounds like such a powerful book. I’m going to see if I can get a copy from my local library. I love the nature / playground photos you’ve posted, it looks like a lovely spring day. I like getting out and about more this time of year.

  2. I read VOX in January and loved it! I did spend most of the book wanting to bitch slap the oldest son, though. LOL. The thought of having no freedom of speech was horrifying, especially because it does feel like it could happen… The book definitley made me feel grateful for the freedom we have today.
