Once a month, I’ll be putting the spotlight on an emerging creative talent, giving them the chance to talk about their craft, share their experiences and provide a platform for people to see their work. I’ll be talking to filmmakers, writers, designers and bloggers, asking what inspired them to create their products, how they they plan to build their business and, of course, about their favourite things.
This month the spotlight is on Cat How, one half of shop/website duo Howkapow. They stock cool and quirky designs and illustrations, from dishy tea towels to alternative prints, and have been featured in the likes of Elle Decoration, Easy Living and Living Etc.
Name: Cat How
Profession: Designer / Creative Director
Location: Bristol, UK
Hi Cat. I’m a big fan of the site. Do you remember the moment when you decided that this was what you want to do?
Yes, I had just left college and we wanted to move back to Bristol and we realised that the only way to do this was to set up something on our own. Howkapow was born!
What did you study and where?
I read English Literature for my BA at Bristol University and did my MA in Communication Design at Central Saint Martins College in London.
Networking and collaboration is key in the creative industries. Who couldn’t you do this without?
Without all of our lovely designers who make all our products… and without the team of professionals who work with us: our lovely PR girl Jess, our web designers and art director and our studio helpers!
Where do you get your inspiration from?
Everywhere and anywhere. I’m a bit of a magpie.
What advice would you give to someone who wants to work in your area?
Work hard and be nice to people. Come up with your own ideas.
What are your career plans for the next year?
We want to expand our range of our own exclusive products, look at opening another shop, either in Bristol or Bath, and launch our re-vamped website. We are also starting up a design blog called the Howkapow Post which will chart all sorts of loveliness.
That sounds great. What is your ideal future?
A range of Howkapow shops, a Howkapow cafe and perhaps even a Howkapow restaurant!
Ooh, I would definitely check those out! Tell me about a few of your favourite things. What is your favourite…
Life of Pi.
The Old Man and The Sea – Hemingway.
Can I say…. www.howkapow.com?
Haha! Of course. Shop?
The Tatty Devine shop in Covent Garden. LOVE.
