Once a month, I’ll be putting the spotlight on an emerging creative talent, giving them the chance to talk about their craft, share their experiences and provide a platform for people to see their work. I’ll be talking to filmmakers, writers, designers and bloggers, asking what inspired them to create their products, how they they plan to build their business and, of course, about their favourite things.
This month the spotlight is on Kara Vallens, a freelance graphic designer who specialises in print work and illustration.
Name: Kara Vallens
Profession: Design & Marketing Assistant at FXU and Freelance Designer
Do you remember the moment when you decided that this was what you want to do?
What did you study and where?
Graphics at Falmouth University
Networking and collaboration is key in the creative industries. Who couldn’t you do this without?
I mostly work alone.
Where do you get your inspiration from?
Literally everywhere! My mum can’t go food shopping with me ’cause I drag her down the alcohol aisle and spend ages there getting excited over new packaging.
What advice would you give to someone who wants to work in your area?
Don’t do it. It’s so competative and most people are big meanies. I say that but I still love it and wouldn’t change it for the world. You just have to take things on the chin and have confidence in your work.
What are your career plans for the next year?
Probably freelance full time.
What is your ideal future?
Make it as a freelancer, making and selling my own stuff.
Tell me about a few of your favourite things.
What is your favourite…
Zombie ones! Probably 28 Days Later, Shaun of the Dead
The Northern Lights
I love this app called Fancy (that counts, right?). It’s full of nicely designed products! Love it.
Art shops in general, I love. Oh! Or Choccywockydodaahs in Brighton. Love that place.
Brighton. I love it there. It’s super creative and just fun!
