I just saw the Supergirl trailer and oh em gee, what the fuck is all that about? Remember the spoof Black Widow trailer which Scarlett Johansson made for Saturday Night Live? Ya know, cos there are no female-led superhero flicks and the world thinks that this kinda shit wouldn’t sell cos it’d be all Devil Meets Prada because that’s what women want? Can you believe this shit? I sat watching this with my jaw on the ground wondering what the fuck was happening. In my Avengers review earlier this week I wrote about how women in superhero flicks/TV shows don’t need to be role models, they just need to be ‘real’, and this is bloody ridiculous. Women want more from their on-screen entertainment than romance, plain Janes and slutty costumes. In fact, a lot of women will happily watch male superheroes and not sit there crying out for a female counterpart. This blogger, in particular, is a fan of the current MCU, as well as TV shows such as Arrow, The Flash and Daredevil (ignoring how annoying Arrow’s Laurel and The Flash’ Iris can be at times), and as much as I’d like to see more of these shows/films carried by women, I don’t think it should be at the expense of well-written characters and stories. Why can’t female superheroes be written/conveyed in the same way as the men? A comic that’s really getting it right at the moment is Ms Marvel and I’d love to see a faithful adaptation of that – a Muslim teenage girl struggling with usual teen girl problems while also kicking ass. That’s more like it!
Now, I haven’t actually read any Supergirl comics but I can only hope that this absolute eyesore, which made me die a little bit inside, is nothing like the source material. A quick Wikipedia search doesn’t reveal much but I like to think that Supergirl isn’t meant to be an Ugly Betty type. If this is what producers think women want to see, I’m dreading what’s coming next. Hopefully Wonder Woman can recover at least some of the respect they have just lost.

I get that she’s trying to be a normal girl and then she starts to use her powers but do we have to have a third of the film be in the The Devil Wears Prada mould for heavens sake. Why not a meatier, darker origin story if that’s the route they are going to take? Oh right yeah because she’s a girl -_-

I miss Lois and Clark: the New Adventures of Superman. I loved Teri Hatcher as Lois and also Erica Durance in Smallville. They need a bit more of that D:
Ah, I remember watching Lois & Clark! It was my introduction to Superman. Never got into Smallville though
Its no tights no flights thing got a bit boring (he didn’t fly much at all in 10 seasons, which was a bit not super). But it’s interesting because I think it was the first time they tried to make a live action superhero team on a low budget. They were a bit hit and miss with female characters, some were awesome and some had some really really bad plots. I would say that Erica Durance as Lois was better than both Iris and Dinah, though. She was a bit of a scene stealer.
