Christmas comes to Truro: City of Lights Parade

I normally don’t like to start thinking about Christmas until after my birthday (six more sleeps, in case you were wondering!) but there’s something about the Truro City of Lights Parade which gets me full of festive cheer. It’s the night that the Christmas lights are turned on in Truro and, prior to the switch-on, hundreds of people take part in a parade watched by thousands. For reals. We got there 45 minutes early to get a spot at the front – and we weren’t the only ones!

The parade has a different theme each year (this year it was Cornish folklore) and sees various local groups, including schools and colleges, create lanterns and walk through the streets of Truro. There are dancers and musicians too.

The lanterns really are a work of art and a sight to behold. Here are some of my favourites from the evening.

Not quite sure what R2D2 has to do with Cornish folklore…

Before the parade we had the yummiest meal at Ask. We tend to only go in Truro once a year as it’s a bit of a trek – and they send out £20 vouchers for birthdays! It would’ve been rude not to have had an early birthday treat, right? You have to spend £50 to use the voucher so we had three courses and a cheeky cocktail. We shared the calamari, had a meaty pizza each (pizza needs animals!) and the chocolate dessert sounded too good to refuse. Yummers!

We also did a wee bit of Christmas shopping but I couldn’t possibly spoil anything for anyone by posting pics here. We got something for our youngest nephew plus a couple more bits for Jenson – buying things for The Boy is so much fun!

What is the first sign of Christmas for you?
