I need to upgrade my blog. It’s time. I keep maxing out the available storage and I’m having to turn down opportunities because I’m not able to monetise my blog while I’m using a free WordPress account. I’ve been at this for over a decade – it’s time to get serious! And I need your help with a couple of things.
Firstly, I’m looking for some advice from anyone who has gone from a free to a paid-for WordPress blog. Before I go trawling through all the help pages, how did you find the change in terms of links? I know they handle re-directs but is that just for the homepage or the internal site navigation too? And anything I’ve pinned?
Secondly, and this is for fellow bloggers and non-blogging readers, is it time for a name change? When I set up this blog a few years ago, it was intended as a place to share my favourite things, hence the name. But it’s not particularly original (it’s a common title for blog posts elsewhere) and it’s not great for SEO. It’s also difficult to create a domain for, so I think it’s time for a change in that department too (I’m also going to work with Luke on a new header and browse new themes and layout ideas in the coming weeks).
I think the ‘Cornish geek’ strapline is what sets me apart and is what I’m ‘known’ for(?) and I was wondering what you all make of ‘A Cornish Geek’ as a potential new blog name? All of the current content will still exist and the style of posts will remain the same. Luke will be taking over a lot of my photography, which is aces (you will have seen a lot of his work over here lately, including photos from Etsy Made Local and St Michael’s Hotel), so I’m hoping that you’ll see a lot of improvements over the coming weeks.
I’d like to upgrade to the premium account but as it’s billed yearly rather than monthly, I can’t afford the upgrade for a while yet – we’ve just had to replace our fridge freezer and its entire contents. Not what you need right before Christmas! So when I’ve got a spare £80, likely in a few months’ time, I want to give this blog a significant boost. At least in the meantime I can work on the new design and layout. It just means I need to delete some of my older content in order to make room for the new stuff.
I’d love it if you could take a minute and leave a comment to let me know what you think about the potential name change and if there’s anything in particular you’d like to see/more less of. I might pop up a reader survey early in the new year (with prizes!) for some more feedback. Likewise, if you’re a fellow blogger with tips on upgrading, I’d love to know your thoughts.
