[Ad review. I was sent a pack of cards for review purposes but all thoughts are my own. This post also contains affiliate links]
One of my favourite games growing up was Top Trumps. My brother was in and out of hospital a lot growing up and we always bought him a pack to help get through the day – and I loved to kick his ass. So I was excited to find that Laurence King Publishing has released grown up alternatives.
Written by Alex Johnson and illustrated by Lesley Buckingham, The Writers Game (Classic Authors) is a great gift for bookworms. The pack features 32 authors, including the likes of Jane Austen, William Shakespeare, Mary Shelley and Arthur Conan Doyle, and challenges players to take a chance on the writer at the top of their pile: who has written the most novels? Who has the most standout characters? Who has gone on to have the most adaptations? Test your knowledge with the coolest/nerdiest game.
Once you’ve memorised the cards, why not treat yourself to the Modern Authors version, featuring such faves as Agatha Christie, F. Scott Fitzgerald and Sylvia Plath.
There’s something for everyone in Laurence King’s games section, including a movie misquote game from my favourite film mag (Little White Lies), and Wonder Women, a feminist version of Happy Families. Gimme gimme gimme!

I loved Top Trumps growing up, so these look amazing! I’d definitely challenge someone to a game with them.
