We went for the 20-week scan this week and it was better than all of our other appointments combined. The first scan was pretty incredible, as was listening to the heartbeat for the first time, but so much had changed in a seemingly short space of time that it was crazy to see.
In the weeks leading up to the scan, it was all about finding out if it was a boy or girl, but on the way to the appointment I was suddenly aware of the fact that that’s not really what the scan is for – it’s an ‘anomaly scan’. But my mind was soon put at ease.
They don’t tell you the sex until everything else has been checked over, so we had a close up of the little nose and tiny fingers gave us a little wave as the sonographer ruled out 60% of potential heart problems, measured the size of various body parts and checked that the kidneys were functioning properly, etc. The only noteworthy observation was that I have an extra bit of placenta – not a problem, they just need to make sure that I deliver it all afterwards. Nice. And then the moment we’d been waiting for! She asked if we had already worked out what it was during the scan. I was so taken in by by watching the little ‘un wriggle around that I didn’t pay any attention to what was between the legs. Then she said how when she was looking at the legs he was proudly showing off his little willy! Aww, we’re having a boy!
On the way home we had to call in Asda for our first gender-specific baby shop. Every time we shop in Asda I have a look at the baby stuff and had planned to buy either the Winnie the Pooh blue dungaree set or grey dress set once we found out. Luckily, there was one set left an it was in the sale! Score!
Since then, I’ve gone through my unisex and baby boy Pinterest boards to create a new Baby Boy board with my absolute favourite bits (and the things that are actually still available) in the hope of whittling down what to get the baby before he makes an appearance. I’ve made a start here and plan to create a final shortlist featuring one of everything in the case of playmats, baby baths, etc, a couple of sleeping bags, several bodysuits, sleepsuits, full outfits, etc, so that I don’t buy to much of one thing. There’s no point in having 20 0-3 month outfits when he’s only going to wear them a couple of time! Then, in a month or so, we’ll register some lists on a couple of sites in time for the baby shower! Fun!
