Last week I blogged about some of the awesome geeky shows I’ve been watching lately – and there’s more! If you’re looking for a new Netflix favourite or something else to catch up on on demand, look no further!
I first started watching Chuck when I moved in with Luke – he had the first two seasons on DVD and I was instantly hooked. Sure the idea of a dorky dude who ends up with a computer program in his brain and can learn skills in a flash is a bit far-fetched but it started out super fun and, as per usual, I got emotionally invested in the characters. By the end of season three I grew less attached but I had to keep watching until the end. I finished the fifth and final season a couple of weeks ago and was somewhat disappointed with the ending but satisfied that I had hung in there until the end. The whole show is now available on Netflix and you should at least give the first couple of seasons a go.
Ah, I’m so gutted this show is over! It’s another I started watching when I moved in with Luke because he had some early DVDs. I think it says a lot about the writing and principle cast that even after the Red John reveal they still managed to keep audiences hooked with the characters’ day-to-day lives.
For those not in the know, The Mentalist is a show about a guy who is really good at reading people and helps the CBI out on cases. This all started when his wife and daughter were murdered by serial killer Red John – he was working as a ‘psychic’ and claimed on live TV that he knew how to track him down. Big mistake. The next few seasons were spent building up to the big Red John reveal and carried on for a season and a half afterwards – even going so far as to introduce new characters for audiences to get attached to.

If you’re a fan, I have to ask, what did you think of the end of the final episode? I loved the end of season six when Patrick and Teresa finally got together and I liked the ups and downs of their relationship in the final season, particularly him wanting to keep her safe but her wanting to stay in that line of work. I was even happy that they got married. But for her to tell him that she’s pregnant at the very end seemed predictable and a bit too much like they were trying to wrap it all up. Patrick spent years dedicated to finding out who murdered his family and not wanting to move on and it was great when he was finally at peace with it all but it just felt a bit too much like he needed to marry Teresa and have a child with her. I think they would have been perfectly happy if they remained childless or if it was left as a possibility for their characters when the show ended. You need to imagine that they carry on after the credits have finished rolling – it doesn’t need to be spoon-fed.
This is one of those shows that I didn’t catch first time round – I saw various adverts and snippets and it just didn’t appeal to me. A few months ago I was looking for a new TV show to watch in bed (pregnancy is a great excuse for an early night!) and Luke recommended his Peep Show DVDs. It took me a while to get into it and I initially found the characters completely unlikeable but once I got through the first season I wanted more. I powered through his Seasons 1-5 boxset and then caught up with the rest on Netflix. The ninth and final series is shooting this year. It’s frustrating when things end when I finally join the fan club!
I bleddy love this show! I was hooked from the beginning and recommend it to everyone. It’s currently six seasons in and just keeps getting stronger. Even after killing off a major character in the fifth season (and breaking my heart a little bit), it continues to engage me and keep me guessing. It’s great to have a TV show led by a woman and with strong supporting female characters, especially characters who aren’t always likeable. In the sixth season, while running for State’s Attorney, Alicia has done a few questionable things, so much so that I even found myself rooting for her opponent. That’s the beauty of this show – characters are flawed and realistic and you’re not always entirely sure who to trust. I like being kept on my toes.
The last episode may have aired three years ago but I only saw the pilot a couple of weeks ago. I’m now a few episodes into season three and I can’t go a day without watching at least a few episodes. When I finished Peep Show I wanted a new show to get stuck into in the evenings and so consulted my ridiculously long Netflix list. I’d recently added a load of shows that had been well reviewed or previously recommended to me by friends – House of Cards, Orange is the New Black, Dexter, Breaking Bad – but wanted something quite light-hearted. After all, I have loads of super-vivid dreams while pregnant and don’t need something really dramatic thrown into the mix! I wasn’t blown away by the pilot but was willing to give it a go for a couple more episodes and now I can’t watch anything else. Most of the characters were initially really annoying (how the hell could I relate to spoiled rich kids?!) but the Serena/Dan relationship reeled me in. My opinion of most of the characters change with each episode but I’m completely addicted!
