I’ve been a fan of Betty Etiquette since I started my lettering journey and was excited to see that Rebecca was leading a brush lettering workshop at this year’s Martha Brook Stationery Social. I really enjoyed the session and, after the event, Rebecca reached out to see if I’d be interested in reviewing her new book – hell yes (please)!
Photos don’t do this stunning book justice (check out my Instagram video for an idea of just how shiny); it’s so beautifully put together and a genuine joy to read before you even get to the practical tips.
It opens with an overview of the history of brush lettering, the benefits of hand lettering, recommended tools, and a beginner’s shopping list, before launching into basic strokes and alphabets.
Rebecca also sent me a Tombow ABT and Tombow Fudenosuke, which was perfectly timed as I’d ruined some older pens by using the wrong paper (yes, there’s right and wrong paper when it comes to brush lettering. I thought I’d ruined the tips by being too heavy handed but it turns out it was the paper).
I had a go with both pens and found that I still prefer the smaller nib while I’m learning; I feel more in control and can see more of a difference in my strokes (above vs below).
After a bit of repetitive practise I got cocky and tried jumping ahead in the book, but it’s so important to learn to walk before you run. I definitely need to spend more time on the drills and repeating letters. When I’m ready to move on, there are so many more fantastic sections of the book which I’ll share with you in a future post, including watercolours, finding your own style, different techniques, and writing on a range of materials. I also love that various pens are demonstrated in the book so that you can see what will work for you before you start shopping.
