Last year I got really into learning to letter but I’ve still got a long way to go. I’ve had fun trying different pens but want to try a few projects, so I was excited to win a copy of Kirsten Burke’s A Year in Calligraphy.

It’s a beautiful lettering journal, opening with an intro to modern calligraphy, tools, and basic letter formations.

Each month is broken down into two different skills to develop and a seasonal project to try, along with space for reflection.

I plan to work through it month by month and hopefully see my progress at the end of the year. Here’s a look at where I’m at at the moment.

I have to admit that I was a bit scared of putting pen to paper but the quality is great and there was no ghosting.

Something I did struggle with was my choice of pen. I went for the Pentel Touch for January, as they’re the pens I’ve found easier to control so far. I found the traceable lettering too thin and I probably would have fared better with my dip pen. At least I can use them to practise in a separate notebook.

Next month I’m going back to basics with the Blink Lettering drills in an attempt to improve my technique. This time I plan to stick to daily practise and hopefully I’ll see some improvements. Wish me luck!
