NSW20: Watercolour Pencils from Executive Pens Direct (sponsored)

One of the things I love most about working with different brands for National Stationery Week is the chance to try a range of products. Executive Pens Direct stock a fantastic supply of Derwent art supplies, including the Inktense pencils. I’ve been meaning to try watercolours for a while and was excited when they sent me the Inkense Wash Pencils Gift Set to play with.

This gift set features eight pencils (Sun Yellow, Burnt Orange, Poppy Red, Fuchsia, Sea Blue, Teal Blue, Baked Earth, and Ink Black), as well as a paintbrush, water brush and spritzer – everything you need to get started. They can be used on paper and fabric, and are permanent once dry, so I’m looking forward to playing with a few different ideas. For now, I’ve been working on incorporating watercolours with lettering.

My artistic skills have always been somewhat lacking, so I started with a rainbow.

I wanted to turn it into a piece of lettering, so used one of my mantras – this too shall pass – adding in some storm clouds and rain. The lettering leaves a bit to be desired (I’m still working through the Blink Lettering alphabet) but I love snapping photos of my creations so I can see my progress. Not bad for my first attempt, ey?

I browsed Instagram and Pinterest for some simple-looking watercolour projects to try (check out my Pinterest board of ideas) and thought I’d have a go at a heart. It looked pretty good until I added the inconsistent lettering!

I definitely had a lot of fun with my first couple of attempts and I’m looking forward to seeing how my skills develop. I’ve been using Ecoline Watercolour Paper for now but would love to feature some stuff in my bullet journal, and perhaps have a go on a tote bag. Practice makes progress.

  1. I love watercolour pencils – and these look wonderful! If I won them, I’d give them to a friend who loves drawing as much as I do, and who might need a bit of cheering up at the moment.

  2. I love the look of these! I used to use watercolour pencils when I was younger (even though I suck at painting) but it’s been years since I last tried them. I really want to try them again now.

  3. My artistic friends were all talking about Inktense pencils this week on our zoom chat. Would love to give them try, they look great!

    1. They’re fantastic. I highly recommend starting with a small pack to play with then growing your collection 🤓

  4. Oh I love using watercolour pencils. What you’ve done with the heart looks lovely, keeping the definition yet blending the watercolour out from it.

    1. It was a fun project to play with. I never considered myself particularly artistic but I’m loving combining watercolours and lettering.

  5. The lockdown has helped me to rediscover my love of ‘colouring in’ and the joy of mixing and matching different mediums – I would love to add some quality watercolour pencils to my collection x

    1. Same ❤️ It’s definitely one of those things lockdown has helped me prioritise and which I’d like to continue when things go back to ‘normal’.
