We were planning a trip to the cinema the other night and I was torn between three titles: The Theory of Everything, American Sniper and Big Hero 6. I felt like The Theory of Everything is one of those films that everyone is talking about and I need to see – but would almost definitely make me cry! American Sniper looked like a happy medium that we would both enjoy and Big Hero 6 came recommended by the boyfriend. We like a lot of the same films (chick flicks not included!) and he has a very good understanding of what I’ll like and even though he said there were three scenes during which I would definitely cry, I ended up picking Big Hero 6. It was a good call and I didn’t shed a single tear! Emma 1 – baby hormones 0. Mwahaha!
If anyone ever tells you that animated movies are for kids, tell them to bugger off! It’s not just the style that has evolved massively but filmmakers are really learning to cater to the inevitable adults in the audience, so much so that they’re not even classed as ‘kids’ movies’ anymore – they’re great films in their own right.
Based on a Marvel comic of the same name, Big Hero 6 centres on boy genius Hiro and his robot buddy Baymax. When he suffers a family tragedy he forms a ragtag band of heroes but what makes these heroes ‘super’ is that they are frickin’ intelligent. They make their own gadgets and can pretty much rival Batman’s Lucius Fox!
Big Hero 6 ticks all of the Disney boxes – it’s heart-warming, entertaining, funny and is a genuine crowd-pleaser. I loved it so much that I’d even go so far as to say that it’s the best animated film I’ve seen since Up! It’s virtually impossible to watch this and not enjoy it – I challenge you!
