Yesterday Jenson turned three months old. Three months! That’s a quarter of a year!
The last month has been packed with little developments. It’s crazy the little things you get excited about when you become a parent – nights when he seems to sleep forever, interacting with toys, trying to roll over… He’s also a lot more into his tummy time since we got this awesome Mamas and Papas snuggle rug.
These last few weeks haven’t been without their struggles though. He’s still on the gripe water because sometimes he has issues bringing up his wind and he’s still quite refluxy. He can be quite vommy even a couple of hours after a bottle. I’ve been reassured that this should sort itself out once he starts sitting up on his own. Which may not even be that far off – he’s been trying to roll over for the last couple of weeks. When we put him down in the moses basket we’ve looked over to find him on his side. Clever little dude! He’ll be out of the basket soon though – he practically reaches end to end. Same with his pram. It’s nearly time for the big boy cot and buggy!
We think he’s going to be a lefty because when he’s on the play mat he always reaches out with his left arm and leg first. He’s super strong too. He holds his head up for minutes at a time and it’s nearly time to try the Bumbo properly. The other day he sat up on the sofa with me watching the Grand Prix. He bloody loves it! In the beginning it was all about the noise of the cars – it really helped to settle him down – but he’s quite taken with our big TV and loves watching anything shiny. I try not to have him watching too much TV though. We watch an episode of Adventure Time on Netflix each day and when Luke comes home they watch an episode of Space Dandy. He loves the bright colours and music. He’s going to think J-Pop is totally normal because we’re watching Death Note at the moment too. Don’t worry, Jenson isn’t! He’s normally settling down in his moses basket when we put it on after dinner.
We’re still not enforcing a routine at this age but he seems to have developed one himself. Most mornings we’re up when Luke gets up for work, have a bottle and a power nap, then it’s play time. We get out the dinosaurs and the tummy time rug before watching a bit of Adventure Time. Then fit in a story before his lunchtime bottle and he tends to have a good nap for a couple of hours or so. He loves being read to. If he’s fussing before we start, I’ll give him a dummy and pop him on my lap for a cuddle. A page or two in, the dummy is spat out and he’s staring at me smiling instead of looking at the pictures in the book. So cute! If it’s a nice day, we’ll walk along the cycle path into town to meet Luke after work. The sea air seems to do the trick because he sleeps really well those nights. One night he went through until 7.30! When Luke gets home they play together for a bit before his bottle and then he’s pretty much down for the night. If his feeds have been a bit spaced out he’ll want another one before we go to bed so he might play a bit in the office and have another story before bed. Any excuse for me to read to him – I love watching him!
Growth spurts are the worst. He spent almost an entire day crying and demanding feeds every couple of hours. At least it knackers him out and he sleeps well at night. Fortunately last time Luke was off for the worst day of it so we took it in turns at trying to settle him. I’m constantly having to retire my favourite baby clothes though. I’m saving my favourites from the first year to make a memory blanket. Well, pay someone else to make a memory blanket – you know me and sewing! Sizes are ridiculous though. Different stores can size their clothes at a couple of pounds apart. It isn’t easy figuring out what to put him in. He was in 3-6 months clothes at a little over two months old and it won’t be long until he’s in 6-9 months. I’ve learned not to buy too far ahead now as you can’t plan for the seasons. Basic clothes are fine – he’ll always need a few pairs of trousers, t-shirts, a couple of jumpers and loads of bodysuits – but the rest is hard to judge. I know I’ve said this for the last update or two but we really are starting swimming classes soon – 17 September. I just hope I can time his feeds and naps properly to make it worth the money. It’d be sod’s law if we get there and he’s just dropped off or crying for a bottle. They’re almost a tenner a session (!) but come highly recommended, so we’re going to give it a go for a term and see what he makes of it/if it’s worth the money. And god help us if his poo cycle clashes with swimming days! His nappies tend to explode a bit. Wish us luck!
