Once you become a parent, date nights grow fewer and father between – I think we get out maybe once every six to eight weeks. You know what couples with young children need? An at-home date night subscription service! And Plan Our Date* are here to help!
The team are about to launch their first box and have kindly sent me a preview to review – lucky us! It comes complete with Spotify playlist, ingredients to make some scrummy pancakes and a game to test how well you know each other, as well as your artistic skills. No pressure then! There’s also some other tasty treats.
We had planned to start off with the pancakes but our eggs were out of date – oops! Guess we’re gonna have to save those for the breakfast in bed prize. What’s that? Yep, the game includes vouchers – for breakfast in bed, a cup of tea and a massage on demand. Unfortunately, Luke nabbed the breakfast. Boo.
We’re very much a couple who stays within our comfort zones. We’re not clubs/noisy bars kinda people – a good night out is pizza/a posh meal and a cinema trip or cocktails/a pint in a pub or bar where you can actually talk to each other. I know, we’re old before our time. But what we really love (and miss) is a lazy day at home, watching DVDs and cooking together. It’s crazy the little things you take for granted before you have a baby. Fortunately the popcorn was the perfect accompaniment for our new Tarantino flick.
I’ve got to be honest, we were a bit skeptical about some of the contents. I’m not particularly arty and Luke thought the game was asking for trouble – the pressure of getting the answers right could be too much for some new or especially competitive couples. We decided to save the canvas and paints to create some art for Jenson’s room at a later date or for him to do some finger painting on. The game, on the other hand, turned into a hit. Despite Luke’s cynicism, it raised more than a couple of giggles as we discussed our favourite memories together. It was weird finding out that the Thomas and Friends theme tune reminds him of me – I always get it stuck in my head before work! Oh, and I won! I got seven right and Luke got six, so I won the tea and massage. Winner!
I’ve had a little look on the Plan Our Date website and it seems that some of future boxes could include vouchers for a night out – dinner, dancing, etc. I think, as relatively new parents (and non-dancers!), I’d like to see a sign-up option for parents who only want stay-at-home boxes, perhaps with a voucher for a free film download and baking/cooking ingredients which don’t require any extras. Perhaps some ingredients for cocktails and little cocktail umbrellas? The Spotify playlist was a nice touch in theory but the majority of the music didn’t do much for us. It would be good for the sign-up option to find out more about the couples, with two or three options which can be adapted for different ‘types’ of couple.
Overall, the subscription is a great idea and a fun way to try something new together without having to fork out for a babysitter. Genius!
