World Calligraphy Day 2017

When I heard that the Manuscript Pen Company were launching the first World Calligraphy Day, I knew it was something I had to get involved with. I’ve hated my handwriting for a long time (I swear it was ruined by learning shorthand!) and have been meaning to find the time to learn some hand lettering techniques this year. Perfect excuse, right?

To celebrate this wonderful, stationery-filled day, there are various events and workshops taking place around the world and, predominantly, at the Pen Museum in Birmingham. Now doesn’t that just sound like the most epically geeky place in the world? I must go!

I was kindly sent a selection of goodies to review as I embark on my calligraphy journey, including Manuscript’s Beginners Calligraphy Set and Callicreative Duotip Markers.

Since 1856, Manuscript Pen Company Ltd has been connected with the pen trade and in the forefront of pen nib manufacturing and design in the UK. World Calligraphy day is the celebration of the history, penmanship and progressive product development and all things calligraphy related.

Charles Stockbridge, Managing Director of Manuscript Pen Company Ltd: “Calligraphy and hand lettering are at the heart of what we do here at Manuscript. In recent years, the art of beautiful writing has taken to new heights with the trends of Modern Calligraphy, Faux Calligraphy and Hand Lettering. These new trends have really taken off, encouraging everybody to try their hand at a whole variety of wonderful creative ventures.”

So, want to see how I got on?

I didn’t have a clue where to start so checked out the resources on the Manuscript website. I found a modern calligraphy alphabet and started copying. I have to admit, I squealed a little bit when I wrote my first letter.

I’m not a very patient person so it took a lot for me to slow down and really try and do this well. I’m quite heavy handed and press relatively hard, so I think it’s a technique that’s going to take me some time to master. I also find sizing and spacing quite hard to master at the moment, so it will be interesting when I come to write words.

I definitely prefer using the calligraphy pen to the markers, at least while I’m still learning. I don’t like my current technique with the thicker pen.

I found it strangely soothing to sit and copy letters and let the ink flow. I think during evenings when I want some time away from the screen I might sit and practice my letters. I found this video of lettering with the duotip markers so I think I’m going to have another go with those when I feel more confident with different strokes.

I’m on the look out for examples and tutorials, so if you have any recommendations, hit me up in the comments below.

Edit: Another quick browse on their site unearthed an app! I’m going to have a proper look through this one evening!

  1. Ohhh I loooove this I wish I’d known about it beforehand! I love handwriting, I always get complemented on it and (you might be surprised if you see my bujo) but I struggle with calligraphy so bad, I really have to practice at it!
