Brush pen review: Ecoline

Disclaimer: I’ve worked with Cult Pens before but bought these myself

I had a play with the Ecoline brush pens at last year’s Stationery Show and instantly fell in love. This was back in my early days of lettering, where I hadn’t even figured out my strokes, and their rep was great at showing me how to actually hold the pen properly and to embrace my own style. I was hooked.

I also jumped on all of the autumn trends last year so, even though I had been eyeing up the green/blue pack for a while, I decided to go with autumn for my first pack. It took me a while to sit down and try them properly but I couldn’t resist a quick swatch for The ‘Gram.

I got some of the Ecoline watercolour paper for Christmas and it’s been great for playing with my new pens. I want to make sure I’m at least semi-confident with them before moving on to my 160gsm journals.

They’re quite chunky, so I’m going to have to go over my drills, particularly the loops, but I love how juicy they are.

There are 12 colour packs to choose from, plus a whopping 60 pens to buy individually, as well as a blender pen.

I’m not sure if it’s the paper or the way I’m writing but the way the ink changes between my strokes bothers me a bit. If you look at the above practise sheet, it’s ok with ‘Jenson’ but really prominent with ‘superhero’, ‘lovely’ and ‘hello’. Does anyone have any tips? Is it just about a smoother transition between strokes?

Once I’m more confident with my lettering I want to get some of the liquid watercolours and start blending – there are 60 of these too!

What brush pens are you loving at the moment?
