More of us are working from home than ever before.
For many of us, it’s more convenient; it’s cheaper (bye-bye commute), it can allow greater flexibility for working parents, and we’re often more productive (no more water cooler moments). But what about the practicalities of paperwork and GDPR? Enter Mi-Doodle.
I met Steve Chapman at this year’s London Stationery Show and was introduced to Mi-Doodle, winner of Best New Desk Accessory at the UK Stationery Awards. I asked Steve how he came up with the idea for Mi-Doodle:
“I’m passionate about sustainability and finding greener consumer products that solve problems without impacting the environment. And I’m interested in creative design and ensuring that both quality and technical aspects are of a high standard.
“My career to date has been in Corporate Business Travel, working for Expedia firstly as UK Invoicing Manager and then as both a UK and European Customer Service Manager. This involved managing a team of up to 100+ staff looking after the business travel needs of corporate clients across 17 different European countries, handling over 4 million transactions annually with an EU-combined turnover in excess of £1bn.
“Managing a large team of staff invariably involves lots of temporary messages and my desk used to be covered in lots of sticky notes. This was obviously messy and some even used to roll up, unstick and fall off my desk! I decided there must be an alternative that was both tidier for my desk and didn’t waste lots of unnecessary paper. The idea for a pyramid-shaped whiteboard occurred to me and, after discovering that nothing like it currently existed, I subsequently went on to design Mi-Doodle desk whiteboard.”
“The design and development of the product from drawing board to prototype took around 18 months. Winning the award, as voted for by stationery industry experts, was a very proud moment for me that really validated my work in developing the product but also recognised its ability to solve some of today’s serious real-world problems. These being the need for a climate-friendly product that reduces waste paper, helps to reduce costs and is able to manage sensitive or financial information responsibly. This last aspect is particularly important as PCIDSS regulation compliancy is now a non-negotiable requirement for businesses and breaches are punishable with fines up to $1/2M for each incident or loss of business licences to process credit card transactions. All of these are solved simply through the ability to erase information and reuse the product.”
There are more than one billion desks in the world. This means billions of pieces of paper or sticky notes used for temporary messages that are then thrown away. Waste paper, like single-use plastic, is irresponsible and detrimental for the planet. It requires the destruction of trees to be produced. Trees that are critical to reducing atmospheric CO2, protecting the planet and conserving habitat. It makes up 26% of landfill sites around the world from 182 million tonnes of paper produced annually.
