Brush lettering. When you think about making the plunge and trying something new it always seems to throw up loads of questions. Where do you start? What pens are ‘best’? Thankfully, Under the Rowan Trees and Blink Lettering have teamed up and curated the ultimate Brush Pen Taster Box!

It’s easy to assume that one brush is just as ‘good’ as any other, but it’s more complicated than that. When you’re starting out, it’s best to start with a smaller and harder tip, such as the Fudenosuke or the Pentel. As you build up your skill level (I can’t recommend the Blink Lettering courses* enough), you can try bigger and softer tips, such as the Tombow ABT and the Mildliner.
You can see below that your style can change with different tips – some lend themselves to somewhat chunkier lettering.
Some are also better than others for blending and watercolour projects. Check out my earlier reviews linked above for other fun things you can do with these pens.
But what do you do when you’ve worked your way through all of the pens in the box? Why choose one brand over another? Well, if you’re anything like me you buy them all!
Seriously though, if you like the feel of one, maybe buy a few more shades, try a bigger project, and go from there. I tend to prioritise brands with a bigger colour range, such as Tombow (there are over 100!) and I’m also a sucker for themed packs, like the sky blue Karins.
Personally, I started with the Pentels, moved on to the Mildliners, threw in some Ecolines and Tombow ABTs for more decorative/watercolour projects, and right now I’m obsessed with Fudenosukes for lettering and Karins for colour washes etc.
