I was sent an Artful box for review purposes. All thoughts are my own
When Ohh Deer first launched their quarterly subscription box for artists I kind of glossed over it. I was just starting to get to grips with lettering and had never seen myself as particularly artistic, especially not skilled in anyway. Over the last year I’ve slowly branched out and tried new things, and I was so excited when the team sent me the ink box to try – right up my street!

Each box contains a selection of premium tools tailored to a specific style or medium. There’s also a magazine, packed with tips and tutorials, as well as videos which you can access via your online account.
The ink box features a pad of watercolour paper, three water brushes, two paintbrushes, a pencil, fineliner, white pencil for glass and ceramics, a wax crayon, fountain pen ink, Indian ink, and, le piece de resistance, five stunning acrylic inks.

The magazine is incredibly well put together. Far from your typical token few pages explaining the contents, it’s so informative and inspiring; I read it from cover to cover. I’m even tempted to buy the magazines from previous boxes, as past products are available to buy separately – along with a shit load more acrylic inks in a fantastic range of colours. Which to go for first…

As always, I started with a colour swatch, marvelling at the bright shades and the amazing 300gsm watercolour paper. I’m gonna need more of this! I also had a crack at freehand lettering with the water pens.

I then did some additional swatches and turned them into baubles using my Gellyrolls.

Of course, I can’t resist a watercolour rainbow and loved watching these inks bleed together.

I wanted to have a go at creating an image within a snowglobe but decided to keep it a bit more simple for my first go. I’m actually quite proud of how this starry winter night turned out. I used the blue and green acrylic inks and my old trusty white Gellyroll for the stars. I’ll definitely be playing with some similar scenes in the near future and might put together some time lapse videos for Instagram too.
