I was sent an Artful box for review purposes. All thoughts are my own
In case you missed it, Artful is the new quarterly subscription box from Ohh Deer. ‘But Ohh Deer already has a subscription box’, I hear you say. Yes, there’s the monthly stationery box, Papergang, but Artful is in a whole other playing field.
I reviewed (and loved) the ink box before Christmas and was so excited to see that the next would be focused on calligraphy.
This beast of a box is a bit of a Tombow special. It features eight Tombow ABT brush pens, five Twin Tone pens, a pencil, eraser, four blank greetings cards, 250gsm paper, plus the usual epic Artful magazine, packed with tips, tricks, and tutorials from top-notch artists.
If you’ve been hanging around this blog for a while, you’ll know I’m a sucker for a pen test. I started out with some basic strokes with the ABTs before testing out both ends of the Twin Tones. It was my first time playing with these and I’m already a big fan. I’m gonna need more colours!
I then started playing with some of the suggestions from the magazine and also used my new tools for some of my #LettersInMyStyle challenges.
The magazine features a range of tutorials and ideas, including watercolour, blending, and shadows. My blending practice was very rough but I really like the orange and red blend – I think I’ll give it another go for some sunset lettering.
I also did a Cornish Geek original. I often find that the bigger my lettering is, the less control I have and the less I like it, so this will take a bit more practice. But how cute are these little watercolour suns? I don’t know about you but sometimes I can be working on something, think it looks a bit naff, then come back to it the next day and really like it. Sometimes it’s good to take a step back.
