Today’s a big day – Jenson is three weeks old and Luke has gone back to work. For ten hours a day, five days a week, it’s me and him against the world! Fortunately he sleeps through most of the afternoon but for the last couple of days he hasn’t been settling so well at night. When he wakes up for a feed at night he tends to want it in bits and takes a while to be winded and settled again (about an hour). When you factor in nappy changes as well (he’s a night-time pooper), the nights aren’t all that fun. When Luke was off work I was able to sleep in til 10/11-ish but that’s going to be harder now. My mum comes over pretty regularly though so at least she can take over for a bit so I can catch an extra hour or so of sleep.
It’s crazy how big he’s getting. I remember thinking when he was born that he would be quite big for the moses basket but he looked teeny when we got home. Now when he stretched out he almost reaches end to end, so it won’t be long until we’ll have to move the cot into our room.
We’ve had a pretty eventful week. We took him to be registered on Monday. It’s ridiculous how unmarried fathers are treated! They have no rights until their name is on the birth certificate and they can’t even register their own child alone. Even when we took him to the hospital that afternoon for a jaundice check they referred to him by my last name. I got the results back today and everything is fine; we only need to take him back for further tests if the jaundice persists or gets worse. The poor little dude had to have blood taken from his hand – he was so big and brave! I felt terrible so no doubt his first injections will be a barrel of laughs in a few weeks.
When we registered him we were also given one of these super-cool book bags. It turns out that every newborn in Cornwall gets free books and then they get more before they start school. Awesome. The woman took our details and registered Jenson on a library list too. We’ve always been keen to read with him from a young age so I imagine we’ll start that soon. I’ve already told Luke he has to do fun voices.
Luke is back at work for nine days (well, seven as he has two days off) before a week’s holiday, so the next few days will be a sort of test run for the weeks after his holiday. By the time he goes back after that Jenson will be five weeks old and I won’t be too far off being completely back to normal. Fun!
