I’ve read a lot of young adult books lately which I’ve wished were around ten or twenty years ago for me to appreciated at a younger age. Lumberjanes* is one such book and, come to think of it, it’s a great book for females of any age.
Released tomorrow, Lumberjanes: Unicorn Power! is the ultimate modern feminist adventure story. A novel adaptation of the popular comic books (which I haven’t read but totally will now!), it features some truly bad-ass female characters. It also casually throws in such terms as ‘herstory’ and ‘goddess’, plus a character with two dads and another who prefers the ‘they’ pronoun. It’s inclusive without being in your face about it; there are no token character types here.
The artwork in this novelisation has been produced by Brooklyn Allen, the original illustrator of the Lumberjanes series, so it feels true to form and you get a strong sense of the comics. Writer Mariko Tamaki’s use of language is spot on too and I’m interested to read some of the new Supergirl series she’s working on.
Lumberjanes is a genuinely inspiring read and it’s full of motivational quotes. Hell, I want to go to Miss Qiunzella Thiskwin Penniquiqul Thistle Crumpet’s Camp for Hardcore Lady-Types. “It is a camp for discoverers and adventurers, creative types and athletic types, and anyone who doesn’t think they are or have a type… a Lumberjane was anyone who had the gumption, the know-how, and the wherewithal to want to be something more than she was already.”
Have I ever mentioned that I freaking love the word ‘gumption’?
Seriously, can I be a Lumberjane? “…every day, if you use it right, is a perfect day to be a Lumberjane. Because Lumberjanes are awesome: dedicated to friendship, learning, curiosity, and caring, to jumping into adventure with full hearts.” They’re the ultimate girl gang!
Now, when is it going to get an anime adaptation, cos I’d totally watch the shit out of that!
*I was sent a copy of this book for review purposes and all nerdy thoughts are my own
